Should You Rent a Car or Golf Cart on Anna Maria Island (or hint…neither?)
If you’re planning a trip to Anna Maria Island and wondering whether you really need a rental car or golf cart, the answer might surprise you: you probably don’t need either. In fact, after our most recent stay on the north end of the island, we realized traveling without both was actually easier, less stressful, less expensive and, surprise, more relaxing.
Getting to Anna Maria Island Without a Car
One of the biggest misconceptions about visiting the island is that you need to rent a car the moment you land. But getting from the airport to the island is incredibly simple.
We booked a transfer with CJ the owner of Navigating the Bay directly from the airport to the island, and it completely changed the way we thought about beach vacations. No waiting in rental car lines. No navigating unfamiliar roads. No worrying about parking fees or traffic after a long travel day.
Instead, we arrived stress-free and immediately shifted into vacation mode with his quick communication, comfortable SUV and professional service from the arrivals area at Tampa International (TPA).
Why Staying on the North End Is Our Favorite
Where you stay makes all the difference.
If you choose the right location on the north end — especially a spot walkable to everything in Anna Maria City proper, like Stillwater Palms — you can comfortably and easily experience the island without ever needing to drive. The north end has a completely different pace: quieter streets, easy beach access, local restaurants nearby, and bike-friendly roads that make getting around feel effortless.
Most days, we simply walked or biked everywhere.
Morning coffee? Easy walk.
Dinner and drinks? Quick bike ride.
Sunset at the beach? Minutes away without hunting for parking.
It honestly felt more relaxing than having a car.

The Free Island Trolley Makes Exploring Simple
One of the best features of Anna Maria Island is the free island trolley that runs up and down the island throughout the day and night.
You can hop on and explore different beach areas, restaurants, bars, shops, and piers without ever touching a steering wheel. It’s free, easy, convenient, and part of the charm of the island itself.
Instead of circling crowded lots or trying to figure out where to park a golf cart, you simply ride the trolley and enjoy the scenery along the way. Stops are frequent so you never have to walk far and there are usually three trolleys around the island so pickups are usually just a few minutes away.

For visitors staying on the north end, accessing the trolley is especially convenient. We simply walked or rode our bikes to a stop, parked the bikes in the nearest bike rack and hopped on. If you want to take your bike with you there is a rack on the front of every trolley too!
Enjoy the Fun of Bridge Street — Then Escape Back to Quiet
One of the best parts about staying on the north end is that you can still easily enjoy the more lively side of the island whenever you want but escape back to the calm.
Bridge Street is full of nightlife, waterfront restaurants, rooftop bars, and live music that make for a fun evening out. Whether you want frozen drinks by the water, live acoustic music, or a more energetic crowd, it’s easy to head south for the night using the trolley, bikes, or a even a quick rideshare (which we did once when it was raining).

But after the music winds down, coming back to the quiet, calm north end feels like the best of both worlds.
Instead of staying in the busiest part of the island all week, you get the calm mornings, quieter beaches, and laid-back atmosphere that make the north end feel so special — while still having easy access to the fun whenever you want it.

Bikes Are Actually the Best Way to Get Around
We quickly realized bikes were the ultimate transportation choice on the island.
Getting to the beach became incredibly easy because we could ride directly there and park bikes at the bike racks at most public beach entrances without hassle. No crowded parking lots. No golf cart charging. No waiting in traffic during busy beach hours. No trying to to find one of a few street parking spots.
Just a quick ride with our backpack beach chairs and we were onto the sand in minutes.
It also made the entire trip feel more connected to the island itself. Walking or riding a bike you notice the palm-lined streets, hidden cottages, waterfront views, and little local details you would completely miss driving around in a car.
Grocery Delivery Makes It Even Easier
One thing that makes a car-free stay surprisingly simple is grocery delivery.
Instead of stopping at the store after traveling, you can have groceries waiting for you through services like Lil Budgie Grocery Delivery or delivered shortly after arrival through Instacart. Forget something that you can’t get at the local Publix? Try Amazon for a day or two delivery at the most.
Stock the fridge with beach snacks, breakfast items, drinks, coffee, or easy dinners without ever leaving the house. It makes settling into vacation mode immediate.
For longer stays especially, having groceries delivered removes one more reason to ever need a car during your trip.
We Never Once Missed Having a Car
On most trips to the island we have rent a car and a golf cart. Before this trip, we debated renting both a car and a golf cart again “just in case.” Looking back, we’re so glad we didn’t.
Not only did we save money, but we avoided one of the only headaches on the island: parking.
During busy seasons especially, parking can become one of the most frustrating parts of visiting. By walking, biking, and using the trolley, we skipped all of it entirely.
No searching for spots.
No worrying about where to leave the cart.
No extra rental fees.
No worries about how to navigate on streets you don’t know.
No stress.
And honestly, that slower, simpler way of getting around felt exactly how Anna Maria Island is meant to be experienced.
The Best Way to Experience Island Life
There’s something about ditching the car that instantly changes the rhythm of your vacation. The trip becomes slower, calmer, and more intentional. You more quickly stop rushing from place to place and start actually enjoying where you are.
If you stay somewhere walkable on the north end, like Stillwater Palms, use bikes for beach days, and hop on the free trolley for exploring, you may realize what we did:
You don’t need a rental car or a golf cart to fully enjoy Anna Maria Island.
You may actually enjoy it more without one!
