Why Visit Anna Maria Island?

Anna Maria Island (AMI) is a seven-mile barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast known for:

  • White sand beaches
  • Crystal-clear Gulf waters
  • Family-friendly atmosphere
  • Old Florida charm
  • Only local restaurants – no chains
  • No high-rise buildings
  • Walkable beach towns
  • Stunning sunsets
  • Excellent seafood restaurants

Unlike many Florida beach destinations, Anna Maria Island is relaxed and uncrowded. The island is made up of three unique communities: Anna Maria, Holmes Beach, and Bradenton Beach.  Where you stay depends on the vibe you are looking for.

Transportation on Anna Maria Island

Do You Need a Rental Car?

For a week-long stay a rental car is:

Recommended for:

  • Families with children
  • Visitors taking off-island excursions
  • During rainy season

Not Always Necessary if:

  • staying near restaurants and beaches
  • you plan to use the trolley, rent a golf cart or bike.

Golf Cart Rentals

Golf carts are a favorite way to explore AMI. Note you will still have to find parking just as you would with a rental car. There have been many trips where we get a car service from the airport and just rent a golf cart!

Benefits:

  • Easier parking
  • Fun for families
  • Great for restaurant hopping
  • Perfect for beach trips

Many repeat visitors use a golf cart more than their rental vehicle.  We love Beachin’ It Cart Rentals because they have great service, new, clean carts and they drop off and pick up from your rental.  If you book ahead use code Island25 to save!

Airport Transportation

Options include:

  • Uber
  • Lyft
  • Private airport transfers – we like this option the best because you always know you will have a safe, secure and on time ride…especially when arriving late at night.  Give CJ from Navigating the Bay a call – he has driven us dozens of times and it is always top notch!

The Free Anna Maria Island Trolley

One of the island’s best features of AMI is the free trolley that runs the length of the island.  We use it regularly on our trips and then we don’t have to worry about having a few drinks or finding parking!

The trolley:

  • Runs from Coquina Beach to Anna Maria City Pier
  • Stops every few blocks
  • Operates daily
  • Is completely free – hop on and off
  • Is safe and reliable
  • Is air conditioned
  • Has an app for live viewing

Final Thoughts

The biggest mistake first-time visitors make is trying to over-schedule their trip. Anna Maria Island isn’t about attractions and amusement parks. The island’s magic comes from slowing down, riding the trolley, spending long days at the beach, watching dolphins offshore, eating fresh seafood, exploring hidden sandbars like Jewfish Key, and ending each day with a Gulf Coast sunset.

That relaxed pace is exactly why so many visitors return year after year..
